Novozymes

Renewed Overview with Logistics Footprint

April 2012

Novozymes is a knowledge-intensive company where the primary focus has traditionally been on production and development. In recent years, however, increased attention has been directed towards internal logistics. A higher flow of goods and growing customer demands for precision have made it necessary to adjust supply chains in alignment with the company’s long-term plans.

Growth Scenarios

Over the past year, Novozymes has analysed the potential for reorganising its warehouse setup to accommodate growth scenarios leading up to 2016–2017. Additionally, with the development of a ‘logistic footprint’, the company has laid the groundwork for scenarios extending as far as 2025. This enables Novozymes to plan its internal flow of goods well into the future.

‘We now have a clear plan for future capacity expansions, and we know the associated costs. With these projections, we can plan investments in line with our growth,’ says Jan Martinus Overgaard, Project Manager at Novozymes, regarding the results of a recent collaboration with Langebæk.

New Focus on ´Logistics and Supply Chain Management

'We want to ensure that logistics is considered early in our solutions so that we do not create bottlenecks as we grow. At the same time, we aim to streamline the flow throughout the organisation to increase capacity,’ says Jan Martinus Overgaard.

These challenges, along with a new management focus on supply chain management, led a newly established project group within Novozymes’ supply chain team to contact Langebæk in autumn 2011. This resulted in the development of a logistics footprint, which Novozymes now uses to project warehouse development based on various parameters. For example, if the flow of a particular type of goods increase, Novozymes can generate a graphical projection showing how the entire system will be affected and, crucially, when bottlenecks are likely to occur.

Expansion Plan Ready

The collaboration with Langebæk has also provided Novozymes with insights into how the physical layout of its primary cold storage facility in Bagsværd can be optimised. By converting from stationary to mobile pallet racking, the company can accommodate nearly 50% more pallets - an alternative to investing in an entirely new cold storage facility. Additionally, Langebæk has developed a roadmap for a warehouse management system (WMS) that can be integrated with Novozymes’ ERP system, SAP, allowing for implementation when required.
